Death By Oil

Role: Lead Animator                                Team Size: 10                                    Engine: Unreal                                 Time: 5 months

Death by Oil is a 3rd-person shooter. In an alternate reality where mechs were used in a World War 1/2 setting you are a crew of the Alliance who has wandered across a still functioning mech on a base you reclaimed that was previously taken over by the Rizar empire. Fight through large numbers of enemy mechs as you use your slow but powerful mech to push towards the enemy base in hopes to put in end to this war sooner than later.

Responsibilities

  • Create player leg model based off of concept and maintain style of chassis

  • Environmental assets including destroyed versions of existing objects and modular building pieces

  • Animating player and enemy legs/waist, AA gun and oil pump

  • Turn 2D logo art into a 3D model.

  • Creating textures and materials for assets

Skills Acquired/Improved

  • Knowledge of the Unreal work-space

  • Understanding of how rigging works

  • Greater understanding of how animating for a game works

  • How/why root motion is used

  • New skills/knowledge to improve workflow in Maya

  • Learning how to properly set up a skeleton for a machine

  • Using Substance Painter to create realistic texture

Challenges Overcome

  • Animating in 3D for a game for the 1st time and overcoming the challenges that come with it

  • Understanding how skinning a hard surface model is different from an organic one

  • Working with the tech team to implement functional animation for the gameplay
